Australians have finally gotten over their decades-long disdain for the nation’s capital; a swift influx of forward-thinking hoteliers, restaurateurs, and bar owners has ensured it. The new QT Canberra is at the epicenter of it all, a cool lair with hidden bar Lucky’s, a retro barbershop, and the Italian-themed Capitol Bar and Grill. Also new in 2014, Hotel Hotel features eclectic rooms designed to ape the iconic Australian beach shack with salvaged oak beds, clay-rendered walls, vintage furnishings, and rain-style showerheads in the bathrooms. It serves inventive breakfasts (try a Snowy River trout hash brown) and shared plates (the very on-trend fried cauliflower with tahini, yogurt, and black garlic) atMonster Kitchen and Bar. Or check out the swanky Avenue Hotel, which debuted in November 2014 and features a Nespresso machine in every room. The city’s art museums continue to flex their muscles: the National Gallery of Australia’s big-ticket James Turrell survey and the National Portrait Gallery’s fascinating In the Flesh exhibition are must-sees for anyone visiting in 2015. Intrigued? Canberra makes an easy side trip from Sydney—about three hours by car or an hour’s flight.  —Nicholas Fonseca, T+L’s Sydney Local Expert
