Dharamsala means “sanctuary” in Sanskrit. And the regional capital of Himachal Pradesh is preparing to welcome a new wave of pilgrims, thanks to the opening later in 2015 of eco-lodge Raas Kangra, a Modernist stone-and-timber retreat in a cedar forest outside the city. With fireplaces in each room and uninterrupted views of the snowcapped Dhauladhar Range, it will be an inspiring resting place for those seeking an audience at the Dalai Lama’s Tsuglagkhang Complex in nearby McLeod Ganj. You can also practice yoga with a resident master, explore urban bazaars and temples, or trek to remote picnic spots in the Himalayan foothills. Consider timing your visit to the annual Dharamshala International Film Festival, for a finely curated lineup of documentaries and features by regional filmmakers. —Shane Mitchell
