This remote and beautiful private Scottish island, Tanera Mòr, went on the market last year, and the sellers have now dropped its asking price
Tanera Mòr is a stunning private Scottish island which came onto the market a year ago, and as the vendors are keen for a sale, the asking price has now been dropped from £2.5m to £1.95m.
The property comprises the main island (around 800 acres) of the Summer Isles archipelago just off Wester Ross, just off the north-west coast. It has a history stretching back to Viking times and the herring curing station established in the late 1700s is still an important landmark on the island. After WWI the vast majority of men left to fight, but didn’t return, and in 1939 the famous naturalist Frank Fraser Darling was resident and left behind many fascinating detailed records and a book rich in detail.
The island was resold again in the 1960s and now is run as a successful tourist business and a superb family residence.
The main cottages have been renovated and the fish farm and post office have been established; the latter provides a unique postal service, issuing sets of beautiful stamps.
The landscape is ruggedly beautiful with hidden lochans, sheltered bays and incredible views – you can see the Outer Hebrides to the west and Assynt to the north. The diversity of flora and fauna is incredible and the clear water provides excellent sea fishing and diving. The current owners have also planted thousands of trees which continue to flourish.
The principal property on the island is the Old School House which sits on an elevated site close to the pier. Accommodation comprises entrance hall, sitting room, cloakroom, kitchen, and three bathrooms, plus a wooden cabin outside with two bunkrooms and a WC.
There are eight further cottages, five of which form a successful holiday letting business with residential courses.
A café currently opens from Easter to September and also hosts private parties, and the post office issues the famous annual stamps, which are prized by collectors around the world. Scottish Sea Farms operate the fish farm and a building let to them brings in significant revenue annually.
Tanera Mòr is located around 1.5 miles off the coast of mainland Scotland by a village called Achiltibuie which has a shop, post office and primary school, while Ulapool (24 miles) has a wider range of facilities.
The guide price is £1.95m. For further information please call CKD Galbraith on 01463 224343 or visit www.ckdgalbraith.co.uk.
