Buyers caught in the credit crunch are looking to move to places with good grammar schools as an alternative to private education

Houses for sale with top performing grammar schools have become even more popular, due to the current economic uncertainty, according to a study from moveme.com. The top five destinations for those hoping to save some cash are:
Chelmsford Harrogate Colchester Kingston-upon-Thames Reading
The report also lists five places that are less favourable than they were in the upturn: west central London, Oldham, north west London, Halifax and west London. Chelmsford takes the top spot, with the fallout in the City shifting families out of the capital. Colchester, in third place, is another popular Essex spot. Both are within a 50-minute train run from London and appeal to re-locating commuters. Harrogate bucks the trend for northern destinations, claims the study, as the only northern town in the top five. Its pleasant setting on the doorstep of the Yorkshire Dales makes it a fashionable area for home movers. ‘While living within close proximity to your preferred grammar school will not influence the chances of your child securing a place there, an increasing number of parents appear to be hedging their bets. ‘They hope to secure a family home situated within a convenient distance of their desired school. As a result, areas such as Chelmsford and Colchester with a number of leading grammar schools are experiencing an influx of families looking to secure a home,’ says Jonathan Turpin from moveme.com.
