The influential newspaper proprietor bought the house in the mid 1960s, and lived there with his wife, Barbara, until his death 15 years ago, continuing to go into his office in Wolverhampton every day until he was 90.
Launched in Country Life today, the house stands in parkland gardens, with fine views across rolling countryside, four miles from Bridgnorth.
It has spacious, well-proportioned rooms that are ideal for entertaining. ‘It’s a very comfortable, convenient, friendly country house, in a nice part of the country,’ says his son, Douglas, who succeeded his father as chairman of the family firm founded by his great-grandfather, now known as the Claverley Group.
‘My father was a great shooting man, who also enjoyed playing tennis, cricket and rugby. He was very happy at Farmcote.’
