Belvedere House arguably has the best views in Guernsey. The 200 year old house on the edge of the Fort George development has a panoramic outlook over the harbour of St. Peter Port and further to Alderney, Herm, Sark, Jersey and the French coast. The elegant, Regency style house was for many years in possession of the War Department, and was previously used as quarters for Army Officers. Then in 1958, it was sold to The States of Guernsey Government, which no longer has any use for the building and it is hoping that its sale will raise many millions which can go towards major infrastructure projects, such as schools and hospitals. 'The sale of this imposing and magnificent property will be one of the most significant transactions in Guernsey s property history,' says Matthew Henry, managing director of Swoffers. The house has simple symmetrical lines and Venetian windows, both classic features of Palladian design. The interior, however, has suffered from being run as an institution. Some original features do remain the brick fireplaces, shutters and some internal doors; also a few of the lovely old drainpipes and wrought iron railings still exist. The guide price is to be in excess of £5m and it is anticipated that a further £3m will be needed to restore the interior. Belvedere House is available to non-residents and will be sold by public auction on 12th June. Swoffers, 01481 711766, www.swoffers.co.uk

Country Life

Country Life is unlike any other magazine: the only glossy weekly on the newsstand and the only magazine that has been guest-edited by HRH The King not once, but twice. It is a celebration of modern rural life and all its diverse joys and pleasures — that was first published in Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee year. Our eclectic mixture of witty and informative content — from the most up-to-date property news and commentary and a coveted glimpse inside some of the UK's best houses and gardens, to gardening, the arts and interior design, written by experts in their field — still cannot be found in print or online, anywhere else.
