Brian Lara and Andrew Strauss to play in charity cricket match in September
On Sunday 14th September the Wormsley Cricket Ground, on the Getty Family Estate in Buckinghamshire (below), will be hosting a charity cricket match to raise funds for the Rwanda Cricket Stadium Foundation (www.rcsf.org.uk). A team of cricketing stars will play under the leadership of one of the greatest batsmen the game has ever seen, Brian Lara.
Brian Lara will captain a select X1 which includes former England cricket captain Andrew Strauss, former England wicket keeper Paul Nixon and the former England women’s captain and now head of women’s cricket at the ECB, Clare Connor. They will play against Brian Lara’s old Warwickshire team-mates from the 1990s, which include former England stars Ashley Giles and Gladstone Small.
They will play a one day 30 over a side match, and the event will raise funds for the Rwanda Cricket Stadium Foundation, a charity established to build the first dedicated, international cricket stadium in the Rwandan capital, Kigali.
With support from patrons including the David Cameron, Andrew Mitchell MP, Lord Chadlington, Jonathan Agnew and England women’s cricketer Heather Knight, the charity is over half way to reaching their target of £600,000. The hope is that this all-star game will bring the charity closer to its target.
Working in partnership with the M.C.C. Foundation, the charity is building the first dedicated cricket facility to create a lasting legacy for the game in Rwanda. Cricket is flourishing in the country, and more importantly, the venue will help bring people together in a nation that still bears the scars of a divisive and traumatic genocide twenty years ago.
