The year 2012 will be hard to beat for landmark anniversaries, but there is much to celebrate in 2013, not the least of which is the 60th anniversary of The Queen’s Coronation on June 2. As everyone knows, 10 years later, in 1963, the Beatles released their first album, Please Please Me, President Kennedy was shot in Dallas, Martin Luther King delivered his ‘I have a dream’ speech, the Great Train Robbery took place, Lawrence of Arabia was Best Picture at the Oscars and Doctor Who started.
Jane Austen’s much-loved book Pride and Prejudice was published 200 years ago this month and the London Underground opened 150 years ago. In 1933, the Inverness Courier newspaper published a story about a sighting of a dragon-like creature in Loch Ness, The RHS Chelsea Flower Show began in 1913, the Royal Philharmonic Society is 200 years old this month and the Kennel Club’s 140th birthday is in April. Composers Wagner and Verdi were born 200 years ago, and Benjamin Britten a century ago.
