Sparkling wine toasts Light Dragoons
A new English sparkling wine is being sold to raise funds for the Light Dragoons

A former army captain turned winemaker has created an English sparkling wine to be sold to raise money for injured soldiers in his old regiment, the Light Dragoons. Kieron Atkinson has named the wine, made from Seyval Blanc grapes grown at the Sitwell family's Renishaw Hall, Derbyshire, after the battle of Sahagun, a decisive victory over the French cavalry during the Peninsular War.

‘I'm still close to my former regiment and, with my new career, saw the opportunity to raise money to help soldiers and their families,' says Mr Atkinson, who co-founded The English Wine Project (EWP) to champion English and Welsh vineyards (www.englishwineproject.co.uk) and who takes wine tours at Renishaw (www.renishaw-hall.co.uk). Sahagun costs £21 a bottle from the EWP.

Country Life is unlike any other magazine: the only glossy weekly on the newsstand and the only magazine that has been guest-edited by HRH The King not once, but twice. It is a celebration of modern rural life and all its diverse joys and pleasures — that was first published in Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee year. Our eclectic mixture of witty and informative content — from the most up-to-date property news and commentary and a coveted glimpse inside some of the UK's best houses and gardens, to gardening, the arts and interior design, written by experts in their field — still cannot be found in print or online, anywhere else.
