Riverside adds 20% to value
The trend for riverside living has grown dramatically over the last few years potentially adding 20% premium to the price of properties

Living by the Thames can add 20% to the value of your home, says a new study from Hamptons International. The trend for riverside living has grown dramatically over the last few years in Britain, and despite slowing market conditions property with good waterside views continues to be strong. 'The fashion for riverside living has grown significantly in recent years and areas such as Marlow, Windsor and Henley have a range of fantastic properties by the water,' says Ian Westerling, regional sales director for Hamptons International's Thames and Chilterns region. Mr Westerling adds that over 23% of buyers from London are looking for a 'scenic property with an easy commute into the capital, and many look for a second home by the Thames. The area is perfect for these buyers, offering country-style living, but within an easy distance from the City.' Riverside property was popular last year and this continues at the start of 2008, despite the adjustment in the property market, according to Hamptons International. Properties on the waterfront in Windsor and Marlow received more viewings during the first week on the market compared to other homes. Purchasers do not seem fussy about the sort of water they will gaze over, with man-made water features, millponds, lakes, streams and canals all regarded as very saleable. 'Water views are an aesthetic characteristic and provide a pocket of tranquillity and peace away from the hustle and bustle of city life,' notes Mr Westerling. * Search for waterside properties on Countrylife.co.uk
