A badger cull petition has received strong support from more than 1,000 farmers in the West Country. It is expected that the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) will rule in favour of a licence.
As reported in the latest issue of Shooting Times, the Food and Farming minister Jeff Rooker will make a decision on 24 October regarding licensed badger culling, but, in the meantime, the National Farmers’ Union (NFU) and National Beef Association have accumulated a 1,050-strong petition.
The petition argues that culling is essential for the control of bovine tuberculosis (TB) and has been signed by enough farmers to cover more than 70 per cent of the proposed culling zone in Devon and Cornwall.
