Hilary Benn refuses badger cull; NFU says decision is 'devastating' for farming families

A badger cull petition has received strong support from more than 1,000 farmers in the West Country. It is expected that the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) will rule in favour of a licence.

As reported in the latest issue of Shooting Times, the Food and Farming minister Jeff Rooker will make a decision on 24 October regarding licensed badger culling, but, in the meantime, the National Farmers' Union (NFU) and National Beef Association have accumulated a 1,050-strong petition.

The petition argues that culling is essential for the control of bovine tuberculosis (TB) and has been signed by enough farmers to cover more than 70 per cent of the proposed culling zone in Devon and Cornwall.

Country Life is unlike any other magazine: the only glossy weekly on the newsstand and the only magazine that has been guest-edited by HRH The King not once, but twice. It is a celebration of modern rural life and all its diverse joys and pleasures — that was first published in Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee year. Our eclectic mixture of witty and informative content — from the most up-to-date property news and commentary and a coveted glimpse inside some of the UK's best houses and gardens, to gardening, the arts and interior design, written by experts in their field — still cannot be found in print or online, anywhere else.
