Evidence of this includes the burial mounds south of Gauting and in the Stockdorf district, which date back to the Bronze Age.In the Roman Imperial period, Gauting was the site of a crossing of a Roman road from Partenkirchen to the north over the Wrm, as well as an associated camp for the occupying troops. The most spectacular find is a Roman clay jar store, in which around 40 whole and 200 broken jars were uncovered in 1930. Later, a bathhouse, workshops, houses and urn graves with numerous Roman finds were excavated. After the Romans withdrew in the 5th century and the Bavarians resettled the fields, the first documented mention that can be clearly attributed to today's Gauting dates back to the 8th century. The place name, which means something like "near Cotto/Godo/Gozzo and his clan", varies in documents up until the 18th century, although the current spelling already appears in the High Middle Ages: 753 Goutingen, 856 Gotinga, 1150 Gutingin, 1409 and 1465 Gautting. However, the village probably had no more than 30 to 40 inhabitants during the Bavarian period. The first documented evidence of the Knigswiesen manor on Gauting's municipal land dates back to 934. The second manor, Schloss Fuberg, is also believed to have been built around two kilometers downstream of the Wrm.According to legend, Charlemagne was born in the Gautinger Reismhle, hence the imperial crown in the Gautinger coat of arms. This information was first mentioned in a chronicle from 1472 by a monk from Weihenstephan. With the opening of the railway line from Munich to Starnberg built by Ulrich Himbsel in 1854 and the resulting faster connection to the state capital, Gauting's rise as a residential area began.
