What to do in the garden in early July: Plant leeks
The leek is in need of a long growing season, so planting soon is essential
The leek is simple to cultivate, but in need of a long growing season. Now is the time to plant leek seedlings in their final positions. Fork the soil through, rake it level and set a line. Take a handful of leeks and top and tail them with a knife, trimming the roots and shortening the leaves. Then, work along the row, pushing a dibber into the soil, drop a leek in, do the same 1ft along the row and so on. Then, fill each hole with water. The soil will settle itself round the plants.
