Gardening tips for September: Plant paperwhites
Paperwhites are the most memorable of the spring bulbs – plant them now and you won’t regret it

If you want to buy any of the plants mentioned below for your own garden, visit www.countrylife.co.uk/nursery and type or copy and paste the name into the search. Plants are delivered in sturdy boxes in a matter of days from one of the finest nurseries in the country.
Daffodils are the first of the spring bulbs to show signs of activity in summer, so it makes sense to begin by planting up pots and bowls for bringing in for indoor display. The most welcome of all are the lovely paperwhites, those tall, slender, pale creatures with the memorable scent.
They don't need forcing, but should be potted up now in a loam-based compost, with some short canes linked by raffia to hold them up in due season. Keep them watered and grow them on in a quiet corner. You won't regret it.
