When Queen Victoria visited Loch Maree in 1877, she was so inspired by the scenery that she commissioned Sir Edwin Landseer to paint it. While staying in a bothy on the shores of the Loch, Landseer painted two famous paintings; ‘The Sanctuary’ – now part of the Royal Collection and ‘Monarch of the Glen’, considered by many to be his greatest work. Over a century later, Loch Maree has lost none of its breath taking beauty and a rare opportunity has arisen to purchase an estate on its shores.
Inveran is an idyllic small estate offering salmon and sea trout fishery in a little over 200 acres of beautiful countryside. The property, which is near Wester Ross, includes the entire length of the River Ewe ? one of Scotland’s shortest rivers, famed for its wealthy of trout and salmon. Inveran Lodge is situated on the north bank of the river with beautiful gardens extending to the water’s edge, designed by Osgood Mackenzie, creator of the historic Inverewe Gardens.

The house, rather like the estate, is a comfortable and manageable size with three reception rooms and six bedrooms. Two cottages provide accommodation for gardeners, stalkers and the ghillie. The Old Manse, Poolewe, designed by Thomas Telford, engineer of the Calaedonian Canal is also included.
Fishing starts in May – the estate has salmon and sea trout fishing rights on Loch Maree. Boats can be launched onto the Loch from a boathouse below the lodge, where there is also a stone jetty. The River Ewe, owned in its entirety from where it flows out of Loch Maree to where it joins Loch Ewe, is a classic Highland river, in parts wide and fast flowing and offering a selection of 16 pools. There is another boathouse on Loch Ewe where a boat can be launched for sea fishing.
Inveran is a unique haven for painters, ornithologists and animal lovers. Since Queen Victoria’s visit little has changed to the landscape around Loch Maree and its combination of freshwater loch, river and sea fishing makes it a perfect fishing retreat.
