Battersea Dogs and Cats Home has a long history of caring for dogs which have been abandoned or whose owners were unable to cope. Unfortunately many dogs at Battersea arrived because their previous owners only considered what they wanted their dog to look like – not its background and behaviour patterns. As a result Battersea has seen a rise in the number of pure breed dogs it receives as well as a rise in the number of dogs that need country homes. The most popular dogs purchased by misinformed town dwellers are, incredibly, Border Collies.
These dogs love mental and physical stimulation – they are bored silly in the city and need space and air and things to chase. Other breeds unhappy with life in the city are Jack Russell Terriers (miniature whirlwinds), Labrador Retrievers, Golden Retrievers (both have endless reserves of energy and stamina), Springer Spaniels (originally bred for retrieving they have energy and stamina reserves to rival the Labradors and Golden Retrievers) and Lurchers (a very strong chase instinct coupled with very bad recall means a three legged Lurcher in the city). Battersea has also lately seen a rise in Japanese and American Akitas. These awe inspiring dogs were originally used as hunters in Japan, therefore they have a very low tolerance of other dogs and so need to move to an area with a low dog population. These are examples of some of the breeds which are unhappy in the city, and over the next few months dogs like these will be looking for places to live where they are more at home, with loving owners who can give them the attention they need. This month we’re looking to rehome Tyson and Prudence.
Name: Tyson
Breed: Rhodesian Ridgeback
Age: 10 years
Reference: 10/21279
This older gent is looking for a quiet but active home who can give him all the love and walks he deserves.
Tyson is such a lovely boy who enjoys cuddles and curling up on a warm, comfy bed. Even though he’s 10 years old, Tyson is still very active and likes to keep himself busy, playing games and fetching tennis balls.
He’s a clever boy who knows SIT and PAW and loves to impress people with his tricks.
If you are looking for a gentle, steady dog who will give you lots of affection then Tyson is your man.
Although he likes other dogs he would rather be the only canine in his new house and can live with teenagers.
If you can offer Tyson his dream abode please contact Battersea Dogs & Cats Home Old Windsor on 01784 494443 or email bow.rehomers@battersea.org.uk
Name: Prudence
Breed: Labrador (cross)
Age: 1-2 years
Reference: 10/21251
Prudence loves life and would live to find a new family who can help her live it to the full. She dreams of a countryside abode with open space and rolling fields where she can go on lots of long walks.
This lovely lady does have a sensitive side and can be worried by new situations so she needs owners who can reassure her and help build her confidence. Once she gets to know you her affectionate and lively nature will shine through.
Prudence has some great basic training in place and knows SIT and DOWN, but she’d love to learn some new tricks! One of her greatest pleasures is food so this would be a good tool in her training.
Although she is sociable with dogs when out and about, Prudence would rather be the only dog in her new house.
Once settled in the right home, Prudence will make a fun and affectionate companion.
If you would like give Prudence a new start in life, please contact Battersea Dogs & Cats Home on 01784 494443 or email bow.rehomers@battersea.org.uk
