16th century farmhouse, Devon
This farmhouse was in a very poor state of repair when it was bought by the current owners in 2001. However, initial work revealed that many original internal features, including oak beams, a 17th century inglenook fireplace, 16th century arch and braced trusses and two beerstone medieval chapel windows, had been covered over and consequently protected. Aside from plumbing and thatching, the work ? using traditional materials and repairing rather than replacing wherever possible - has been carried out entirely by the owners, who, among other things, have hand-made all the windows, laid reclaimed floorboards throughout and re plastered where necessary.
