Poet Francisco Asís de Icaza once wrote that there is nothing sadder in life than being blind in Granada and, given the visual riches of a typical Andalusian interior, it’s hard to argue. Although the walls of houses are necessarily white to counteract the stifling heat, the decor of the region bursts with vivid yellows, blues, greens, reds and oranges. This is intensified by a strong Moorish influence, weaving in patterns across wall tiles, floor coverings and fabrics.
Invite its mélange of cultural influences in without opting for a slavish re-creation. Although furniture in wrought iron and dark wood, such as mahogany, is conventional and provide contrast against exposed stonework, lighter timbers and wicker give a fresher feel. Opulent pattern would ordinarily be restricted to fabrics and upholstery, but a modern aesthetic allows for geometric Moroccan-style wallpaper in lighter tones. Underfoot, opt for stone or terracotta flag- stones bordered by hand-painted tiles with woven rugs.
Accessories are crucial for evoking a sense of tradition, so invest in beautifully crafted ceramics, floor-standing plants and eye-catching table lamps with colourful shades or detailed bases. Layers of light work best to highlight colour without focusing on one particular area. A combination of lanterns, wall sconces and pendants does the trick while maintaining a sense of being deeply rooted in time.
Finally, keep the emphasis on natural materials and texture, even for smaller accessories—a mirror with a tactile frame, embroidered cushions and throws are ideal for a heavenly hacienda.
