Most of us will spend up to a third of our lives asleep. It’s therefore wise to look – and try out – a few different beds when it comes to buying one. Amanda Oldfield, founder of The Wrought Iron and Brass Bed Company believes the right bed is an important investment. Here, she offers her tips on buying a new bed:

  • Of course, there’s no question that mattresses matter. However, it’s also important that you give equal consideration to the look, styling and materials of the bedstead itself.
  • A new bed is an investment – not just in monetary terms, but in your comfort and wellbeing, as well. After all, you can’t put a price on a great night’s sleep – and whilst there are plenty of factors involved – choosing the best bed and the best mattress will at least give you the best start.
  • There are few things worse than not being able to stretch out; denying yourself bedspace won’t result in a restful night. If in doubt, go for a larger bed and enjoy the luxury of having plenty of room.
  • Aesthetically, try to choose a bed that will look as good in 10 years’ time as it will today. Tastes and trends will change, but a beautiful wrought iron or brass bedstead will never go out of fashion – and of course, it’s a wonderful base for a wide range of linens, covers and cushions.
  • If you love the look of traditional bedsteads, but want a more contemporary feel, why not consider a classic bedstead that has been finished in a modern colour? Brights such as zesty yellows will give a bedroom an instant colour pop, whilst pastels are a soothing choice and surprisingly versatile.
  • Antique and vintage bedsteads are still sought after because they were made so well and by skilled craftspeople. Modern versions using materials such as brass and wrought iron are robust and will last the course – but take care to check details such as fixings and finials, which will often be inferior on lesser bedsteads.
  • Look out for the quality of paint and metal finishes, too. ‘Seams’ or ‘joins’ where parts of the bedstead have been welded should be neat and uniform. And for metal beds that have been painted, check the surface of the paint. It should be smooth, with an even coverage – and certainly no lumps or worse, bubbling.
