This weekend sees the inaugural UK Fungus Day. On Saturday, October 13, there will be talks and walks up and down the country celebrating the important world of fungi, including a search for the UK’s biggest fairy ring, which occurs when a single fungal spore is blown onto grass and germinates, producing fine filaments which radiate outwards. Last year, a fairy ring 164ft in diameter was found near Ystradfellte in the Brecon Beacons.
The idea for UK Fungus Day stemmed from the success of last year’s National Fungus Day, held at the National Botanic Garden of Wales. It’s part of Biology Week and is supported by organisations such as the British Mycological Society and the National Trust. To find your nearest event, visit www.ukfungusday.co.uk
