The jet set has always had a soft spot for the Caribbean but not every island will do.
The richest among the rich choose Anguilla, Barbados and the Bahamas as their favourite playground, according to a recent study by Savills.
The growing breed of the super-wealthy—in the past decade, the billionaire population has seen a six-fold increase, according to the study—are looking for low-density, pristine settings offering maximum privacy, including the latest technology and security systems.
Local infrastructure, from access routes to the availability of good entertainment, sports and leisure facilities are also high on the list of buying priorities—which is why only a handful of select islands, like Anguilla, will catch the eye and attract the purse of the very affluent.
‘The most upscale properties are those that are located on the beachfront, in the private and unspoilt environments of Anguilla, Barbados and the Bahamas,’ says Savills’ Charlotte Wilson.
Of course, houses have to match their backdrop. The ultra rich seek large beachfront plots with unobstructed sea views and landscaped gardens that allow for plenty of outdoor living. ‘Homes tend to benefit from a high level of security, are fully staffed and include landscaped gardens and swimming pools—with mega yacht berths and private jet facilities within reach,’ says Miss Wilson.
‘In terms of fit outs, the homes boast state of the art kitchens, spa-like bathrooms and are finished with a range of exclusive natural materials. Owners will often employ a UK interior designer and tend to ship furniture from the UK or the US.’
