House prices on the Silver Coast in Portugal are around a third lower than those on the Algarve at the present time, and all indicators point to the fact they are on the rise. Knight Frank earmarked the area as ‘one to watch’ in its recent Wealth Report and as the appeal of the Algarve wanes due to development, tourist offices along the coast are anticipating lots of interest from those who want to buy second homes in this area.

The Silver Coast stretches all the way from Porto down to Lisbon on the Atlantic side of the Iberian peninsula, and is well-known for its rugged beauty. Beaches are spectacular and the strong currents and large waves make the coastline a Mecca for surfers. To ensure its charm isn’t spoiled, developers are subject to strict planning permissions along the Silver Coast, and only very high quality properties are allowed to be built.
One such development is Quintas de Óbidos, an exclusive development of 79 luxurious villas, each set within around 1.3 acres. The villas are designed to reflect traditional Portuguese architecture, although they are also fully equipped for modern living. Each villa incorporates around 8,500 sq ft of living space, providing absolute privacy, and the grounds boast an equestrian centre designed by Jessica Kurten as well as an exclusive country club with restaurant, spa, two swimming pools, two tennis courts, a sports pitch and a children’s play area.
The Obidos region in particular is emerging as a hotspot. Labelled ‘the Silver Coast’s golden triangle’, the area comprises around 3,000 hectares (7,400 acres) and is set to have four championship golf courses in two years time, as well as an international standard equestrian centre within one year.
Abreu adds: ‘At Quintas de Óbidos, we expect prices to double in three years. There is nothing else like it in the area and the exclusivity of the plots, coupled with the exceptional on-site facilities and services mean that demand is set to continue.’
