AChinese armorial bowl that doubles as a chamber pot and a Military Cross dating from the First World War are among the lots at an auction of pieces from one of Wales’s oldest estates. Following the death of Joy Stepney Gulston, chatelaine of Derwydd Mansion in Llandeilo, Carmarthenshire, last year, a number of the family’s treasures are going under the hammer.
Many are intertwined with its history-the Military Cross (estimated at £400-£500) was awarded to a relative, Lt A. S. Gulston, and the chamber pot (£1,200-£1,500) is decorated with the arms of Stepney. The auction will take place on March 19 under the auspices of Anthemion, specialist in Welsh art (029-2047 2444; www.anthemionauctions.com).
