Princes William and Harry are creating a charitable foundation, bringing together the various charities that they support. The foum will be held at St James’s Palace.
The organisations are diverse, ranging from the Welsh Rugby Union and homelessness charity Centrepoint to the Henry van Straubenzee Memorial Fund, building primary schools in Uganda in memory of a schoolfriend of Prince Harry’s, who was killed in a car accident.
Prince William stated that he doesn’t want to be ‘an ornament’, and is committed to being ‘more involved’ in charity work rather than ‘turning up and opening things’.
The prince said he was inspired by the example of his parents, Prince Charles and the late Diana, Princess of Wales. He added: ‘I try to take the best bits of my mother’s charitable work and the best bits of my father’s charitable work and do them both together.
‘I’m not in their league, but I’m warming up, hopefully, and I’m trying to do what I can.’
Prince William said he was also influenced by his grandmother, The Queen: ‘How she’s gone about things, and how she cares about areas of life and people is particularly important.’
He noted that getting involved in some charitable projects was ‘a gamble’, but that ‘even if it only changes one person’s view, then it has been a success’.
