Ston Easton Park is a Grade I listed building of 1739, within a classical landscape created by the great 18th Century landscape gardener, Humphry Repton. Ston Easton Park was once the home of the Hippisley family, whose family crest still adorns the ornate ceiling of the Saloon. The house has been sensitively restored since the 1960s, most notably by the distinguished former editor of The Times, William Rees-Mogg.
Within the house itself there is a fine collection of antiques and furniture. The Library, a lovely, almost square, room still contains its original mahogany bookcases. While the Saloon, once said to be the finest room in all of Somerset has in the centre of the ceiling, an ornamental oval containing ‘The Eagle of Jupiter’.
An eerie story is behind the painting on the end wall in the Yellow Dining Room. The picture is of four servants of the house and rumour has it that the Housekeeper in the picture murdered the Stillroom Maid when she found her kissing the Bailiff. The murdered Stillroom maid is still said to walk the corridors of Ston Easton Park!
Unique Gardens
Guests love to explore the thirty acres of 18th Century parkland, which was created by Humphry Repton and more recently restored by the outstanding gardener, Penelope Hobhouse who, in the late 70s, was commissioned by the previous owners of Ston Easton Park to restore and redesign the kitchen garden into ‘compartment’ areas of interest.
At the same time, she designed the rose garden and the cutting garden which are still here today and are now being restored. Simply sit and listen to the soothing sound of the River Norr or thrill your senses with a stroll through the cutting garden, source of the fresh flowers at Ston Easton Park.
Head Gardener, Christin Dredge, along with the dedicated garden team, are constantly working to maintain and develop the grounds, including the Victorian Kitchen Garden, so that guests can continue to enjoy the fresh produce used in Head Chef, Matthew Butcher’s creative menus, and the freshly cut flowers used in the fabulous floral displays around the house, created by our by our inspirational Florist Jude.
The parkland at Ston Easton Park is now the only remaining Humphry Repton landscape in Somerset. His ‘Red Book’, a facsimile demonstrating his plans in ‘before’ and ‘after’ stages, illustrated in wonderful watercolours, can be found in the hotel reception.
