Double fronted townhouse on The Thames

This fine old two-storey double-fronted house, called The Terrace, was built as a cottage on The Thames around 1760 and two more floors were added in the 1870s. The house has a romantic history: it was the country home of Le Comte d’Antraigues who fled to France before the revolution and spied for the British.

The current owners bought the house as a ruin in 1977 and completely restored the property, keeping fascinating period features like the rare pressed plaster ceiling in the kitchen/living room. Some original door handles remain, along with servant bell pulls and a pair of tinkling front door bells. An 18th century wine cellar survives in the basement alongside the original butler’s larder with its original door and key.
