Beyond the Garden Gate
Four West Country artists known as the scraptors (they specialise in making sculptures from pieces of scrap sourced from skips, roadsides and recycling yards) have installed a sculpture trail by the Six Wells in the woods bordering Stourhead Gardens in Wiltshire. Anthony Wilson, Fiona Campbell, Paul Boswell and Rachel Macleay have also collaborated on some pieces together.

Brian Wall – New Works to mark the artist’s 80th year. Owen Yalandja – Yawk Yawk – water-spirit carvings from Maningrida. Yawk Yawks are the mermaids of aboriginal lore – each community across Australia has its own version. There are several parallels in other cultures, such as the Seduna (the mermaid of Inuit lore), the kelpie (the female water spirit that inhabits Scottish waters) and Sirenes (embroidered onto Voodoo flags from Haiti). David Worthington, Vice President of the British Society of Sculptors, has curated an exhibition of works by six young British sculptors for the grounds of Glyndebourne during the Festival. The Garden of Eichstatt 1613 by Basil Besler (1561-1629) – 100 botanical Besler copper plate engravings (later coloured) from the first edition of Hortus Eystettensis (pub 1613), one of the largest collections to be hung together for over a decade. These incredible botanical studies represent a very important part of social history. They show a pictorial record of the flowers growing in the finest and most extravagant European garden of its time, the Garden of Eichstatt. The garden soon became the most famous and celebrated in Europe. Besler was commissioned to commence an engraved recording of all the plants and the grandest, most expensive illustrated catalogue of its kind – a florilegium – was first published in 1613.
