Willow Wildlife

Beyond the Garden Gate
Four West Country artists known as the scraptors (they specialise in making sculptures from pieces of scrap sourced from skips, roadsides and recycling yards) have installed a sculpture trail by the Six Wells in the woods bordering Stourhead Gardens in Wiltshire. ‘Moore at Hatfield’ – an exhibition of works by Henry Moore in the formal garden and woodland at Hatfield, the largest collection of his monumental works ever exhibited in the grounds of a country house, Also at Hatfield House, Hertfordshire is ‘Hatfield 400′, centred on the amazing early copy of the King James Bible still at Hatfield. This unique edition was one of only 27 printed for the King, Queen and Privy Council and it has Cecil’s coat of arms in tooled leather on the front. The small exhibition explores the completion of the King James Bible in 1611 and the special relationship between King James I and his most loyal chief minister, Robert Cecil, who was involved in almost everything happening in the country at the time. It includes a dozen or so manuscripts from the archive, including letters from the King to Cecil of 1609, and other things relating to the building of the house, correspondence about the Gunpowder Plot etc. The exhibition is in the dining room at Hatfield, where the tapestries of 1611 representing the Four Seasons hang. The Garden of Eichstatt 1613 by Basil Besler (1561-1629) – 100 botanical Besler copper plate engravings (later coloured) from the first edition of Hortus Eystettensis (pub 1613), one of the largest collections to be hung together for over a decade. These incredible botanical studies represent a very important part of social history. They show a pictorial record of the flowers growing in the finest and most extravagant European garden of its time, the Garden of Eichstatt. The garden soon became the most famous and celebrated in Europe. Besler was commissioned to commence an engraved recording of all the plants and the grandest, most expensive illustrated catalogue of its kind – a florilegium – was first published in 1613. Hapshash Takes a Trip – the sixties work of Nigel Waymouth, who, by 1967, had established himself with Michael English as one of the most progressive design collectives, calling themselves Hapshash & the Coloured Coat. Hapshash are best known for their psychedelic posters created for the biggest underground music venue of its time, the legendery UFO Club. The artwork on show, including huge silk-screened reproductions of iconic posters, shows the subversive mix of avant-garde and art nouveau which became the signature style that defined psychedelia.
