Romantic Scottish tower house with Solway Firth views

A beautifully renovated, romantic tower house in Scotland has come onto the market in the south west of Scotland, with views to the Solway Firth

Abbots Tower is a fully restored Scottish tower house near Dumfries. It has a history dating back to a long association with nearby Sweetheart Abbey, with which the second tower on the site was almost certainly partly built, around 1580, in the latest French style of the time, now known as Scottish Renaissance.

Architectural features include pepperpot turrets and candlesnuffer roofs, crow stepped gables and wide spiral staircases. There is also handmade ironwork, stone staircases, exposed beams, original wooden floors and period fireplaces.

Accommodation is spread over four floors. The main reception room is on the third floor and has exceptional views and a small larder in the turret, as well as a secret staircase to an attic bedroom in the garret, while the kitchen is located on the first floor. There are four bedrooms in all over four floors, including the guest suite on the ground floor and the master suite, as well as the Garret room and the Caphouse on the top floor, which also has access to the roof and the flagpole.

The grounds come to just under an acre and consist of woodland, shrubs and wild flowers. One side of the drive has been planted with an orchard. The east side of the house has been set to lawn to maintain an open aspect.

The house sits in rolling countryside near New Abbey and Dumfries, with distant views out to the Solway Firth. New Abbey itself has a saw mill, two hotels, a shop, primary school, local doctor, two churches and the Shambellie House Museum of Costume.

The guide price is £625,000. For further information please contact Strutt & Parker on 0131 718 4599 or visit www.struttandparker.com.
