$3,800,000 - The Tree House is featured in the December 2009 issue of Architectural Digests Estates For Sale! Click here to see The Tree House in Architectural Digest. This is THE TREE HOUSE at Palmetto Bluff – and there is quite simply nothinglike it. Crafted with superior quality from nearly 90% reclaimed materials and architectural enhancements such as doors, gates, river recovered heart pine and pecky cypress, hand made brick and cobblestone, and Indian fossil stone, The Tree House marries the best of old and new with such modern luxuries as heated floors, multi-media experiences, a state of the art kitchen, exquisite furnishings and original artwork. A languid, meandering residence, The Tree House basks in the shadow of the prominent Live Oak, for which it was named. Master builder/artisan Ron Strimpfel has created a truly masterful piece of construction that beckons you to make yourself comfortable and stay awhile. The awe inspiring outdoors are as magnificent as the indoors, with back porches affording sweeping views of a cool lake and private island boasting its very own magnificent oak. The main house consists of an open, but artfully segmented living/dining/kitchen/den space. The wall of windows connecting each area truly brings the sunlight into the heart of the home. The main residential area also includes a second wing of top-tech media room (fully outfitted and electronically equipped) and very special library. A laundry room with exemplary storage rounds out the amenities of the main house. To call the kitchen “gourmet” is to belie its subtle sophistication. It integrates seamlessly into the “living” areas and softly offers every convenience and top tier appliance and feature. The master wing is a respite beyond respites, and will envelop you in its cool and classic ambiance. The bath is superior in finish, with unexpected features such as an “in mirror” television, built in towel warmer, all glass, oversized shower, and more. There is a fully functional, spacious, and self- contained dressing room, leading to the superlative master bedroom, which opens to a private screened porch overlooking the backyard and lake. The 3-car garage is arguably the nicest you’ll ever see. Stained concrete mixes with antique pine for the floor, while a side entry leads to a complete guest suite/apartment upstairs. The second guest dwelling, housing two complete suites, is separated from the main house/master wing by a beautifully landscaped and waterscaped courtyard. In short, nothing has been left to chance, but everything left to the imagination. Imagine yourself living in the Tree House… The Storied Pasts of Materials used to Create the Tree House Hundreds of Years Old Wood: It is hard to imagine that the large, dimensional antique heart of pine and cypress timbers that line the living room and dining room of the Tree House were actually growing in native U.S. forests when Columbus discovered the New World. These timbers were recently reclaimed from the Alice Mill, a turn of the century textile Mill in Easley, SC. River-Reclaimed Old Growth Logs: The slow caress of 150 years of river currents has provided us with the unique lumber utilized throughout this custom home. During the mid-to-late 1800s, large cypress and pine timbers, cut from native US forests, were shipped downstream on rafts. Lost cargo was common and many of the nation’s riverbeds became repositories for these large ancient timbers. With an eye on preservation, we recovered over 10 truckloads of these antique timbers and hand selected only the largest and most structurally dense members (over 30 growth rings/inch in some cases) to be cut and used for the exterior siding, rafter material, exterior doors and library. Sawcut Flooring: The lumber used in the ceiling and floors throughout our home was created using recycled framing materials from 60-100 year-old structures. In the early twentieth century, lumber was milled using a large circular saw similar to the one shown. Over time, the surface of this 3 and 4 inch material (typically joists) developed a rich patina due to its exposure to the elements. Upon reclamation, our goal was to preserve the exposed face of this antique material to showcase a unique color and the evidence of the original saw-marks first created over 100 years ago. In fact, on many of the old joists reclaimed from the New York reclamation project in 2004/05, we actually found old mill stamps tracing the origin of the material back to Savannah, GA (circa 1890) Old growth, antique “Sawcut” pine flooring in rare 6-9 inch finished face widths. This old growth antique heart pine was reclaimed from a turn of the century warehouse damaged during 9/11. It is 90-95 percent heart content and has been lightly sanded to showcasthe circle saw marks from the original milling. No stain was used on this product Cobblestone: The 5,000 hand-shaped cobblestones used to create this fireplace were excavated from the historic Fells Point district in downtown Baltimore, and date to the mid 1700s. Many of these stones were carried across the Atlantic as ballast for British cargo vessels, which offloaded them in exchange for folds full of American goods and raw materials. Chestnut Doors: The three antique chestnut doors in the Library and Master Bedroom, reclaimed from a government building in Danvers, MA, were hand built onsite in 1857 by local craftsmen who used readily available old growth chestnut stock from nearby forests. At the time, large virgin forests of chestnut grew throughout the northeast, with trees averaging up to five feet in diameter and up to one hundred feet tall. However, in 1950, the keystone species on some nine million acres of Eastern forests had disappeared. The true value of these antique doors is hard to assess due to the fact that they were fabricated by hand, using pre-blight chestnut from original forests during the mid 1800s. Pecky Cypress Ceiling and Walls: We found only 800 feet of extremely rare pecky cypress in the +20,000 ft of river-reclaimed timber cut for this home. We kept the widest pieces of antique pecky cypress to adorn the library walls and ceilings to create a warm, Old World look of time gone by. Pecky Cypress Exterior Doors: Pecky occurs when the living wood is attacked by a fungus, resulting in lens-shaped pockets throughout the wood. When finally cut for paneling, it yields an attractive three dimensional look unlike any other wood. Studies have not revealed the exact origin of the fungus or why it attacks only certain woods. Only 800 ft of extremely rare river-reclaimed pecky cypress was found in the +20,000 ft of cypress cut for this home. We provided this material to a local craftsman, who create our unique exterior doors made from a combination of two-inch river-reclaimed antique heart pine and river-reclaimed pecky cypress. Cypress Siding: During the mid to late 1800s, large cypress and pine timbers cut from native US forests were shipped downstream on rafts during the building of colonial America. Lost cargo was common and riverbeds became a repository for these large, ancient timbers. The twelve inch river-reclaimed antique heart cypress found on the exterior of this home was extremely difficult to acquire. Over 10 truckloads of this +150 year-old wood were cut and hand-sorted in order to yield enough of the 12 inch wide material to complete the 10,000 square feet needed for the exterior siding. In an effort to preserve every last stick of this rare commodity, the balance of the material was masterfully integrated into the construction to create the exterior doors, library, and decks. ...(more) (less)
